The Republic of South Africa, in partnership with Emory University, is committed to establishing a sustainable economic model for drug discovery that seeks to bring about lasting improvements in the health and economic self-sufficiency of the people in South Africa and throughout the Sub-Saharan region. HIV, malaria, and tuberculosis, as well as less well-known but equally devastating diseases such as shistosomiasis and trypanosomiasis, are overwhelming the country’s healthcare delivery system and inflicting tremendous human suffering. The crisis is compounded as some of the nation’s best and brightest health sciences professionals are choosing to use their talents elsewhere.
To face these challenges The Republic of South Africa has identified biotechnology, and in particular drug discovery and development, as a primary health and economic development opportunity. This approach requires an integrated response that combines workforce development with accelerating the discovery of lifesaving drug therapies. The Republic of South Africa and Emory University have responded with a comprehensive training program that seeks to equip South African scientists and entrepreneurs with the skills needed to make South Africa a global player in the discovery and commercialization of new drugs, especially those targeting unmet needs. |
