The Emory University K-12 Water Quality Project is an alliance of faculty and students from Emory University and Atlanta area schools participating in a collaborative water quality monitoring project. The project provides students with a Problem Based Learning experience when correlated with the curriculum.

The goals of the project are:

  • To increase an awareness of environmental issues in our student population.
  • To help students develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of science by presenting it in a real world context.
  • To increase interactions between K-12 and college level students (enrolled in certain Emory courses, Chem 296L for example) through water sampling trips, email and internet videoconferencing.

Faculty and students at Emory and the affiliated schools interact regularly:

  • They share expertise in water quality analyses.
  • They take their students on joint water sampling trips.
  • They share funds to obtain equipment and computers for their classrooms.

They work together, with civic organizations like The Chattahoochee RiverKeeper to create a comprehensive database of water quality data of the Upper Chattahoochee Watershed.

School teachers may attend PBL training workshops that are run by Dr. Ram and colleagues at Emory or receive training at Georgia Adopt A stream training workshops.
