How to Apply

All applications are processed through the Graduate School of Emory University. We strongly encourage all students to apply electronically at https://apply.embark.com/grad/emory/gsas/21/. Prospective applicants are considered for admission only after completing the formal application to the departmental doctoral program in chemistry through the application site at the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences website.

Completed online applications will automatically be forwarded to the Chemistry Department and reviewed by our admissions committee which makes recommendations on student admission to the Graduate School office. Upon final approval by the Graduate School, offer letters are sent to successful applicants.

Fee Waivers:  A limited number of application fee waivers are available to encourage early applications. Please contact gradchem@emory.edu.

Application Process

Deadline: January 3, 2009

grad_students Please review the following checklist to ensure that your application is complete and correctly submitted to the Department of Chemistry at Emory University:

1. Complete and submit your online application at
https://apply.embark.com/grad/emory/gsas/21/

The recommended time for submission is August 2008 to December 2008. The statement of purpose is part of the online application and does not need to be submitted separately.

2. Three letters of recommendation. You will be asked to provide contact information for three references. Emory’s application system will contact these individuals directly and ask for their letters of recommendation to be submitted electronically.

3. Official transcripts of your grades from the institution where you received your bachelor/masters degree. Students can upload copies of their transcripts as part of the online application which will expedite the review process. However, prior to official admission to the program, applicants are required to provide original transcripts. All official transcripts must be sent to the address below.

4. Financial Certificate Form (international students only). International students will be asked to complete this form as part of the online application process. Please print out the PDF file and, after fill in the form, mail it via US postal service to the address below.

Note: The Graduate School requires all international students to submit a financial certificate before considering an application complete. If you do not have funding it will not effect the review process. Simply indicate zero and submit your financial certificate with your application materials to the address below. International applicants who have concerns about completing the Financial Certificate, should complete the application to the best of their ability. This information is required by the university for statistical purposes only and is not a factor in determining financial awards.

5. GRE. Your GRE scores may not be more than five years old. Only the official test score, reported by the ETS to Emory directly are accepted. If you have not done so already, please instruct ETS to submit your test scores to Emory (Institutional Code: 5187). Faxes, emails, and photocopies of test results mailed by the applicant are NOT accepted.

Although there is not a minimum score for the GRE, a score above the 50th percentile is typically fine. The Department of Chemistry does not require the GRE subject test.

6. TOEFL (international students only). Computer and paper-based tests, as well as iBT scores are accepted. International students must submit their TOEFL results (maximum 2 years since test date and the minimum score: iBT: 80 ; CBT: 213 ; PBT: 550). International students that have spend more than one year studying in an english speaking country are exempt from submitting TOEFL scores. NEW: IELTS scores are now accepted as proof of English language proficiency of students whose native language is not English.

Mail official score report to the address below. Faxes, emails, and photocopies of test results are NOT accepted. Students whose native language is not English will take the TSE after they arrive at Emory University.

Submit all application materials to the following address:

Emory University
Chemistry Department
Attn: Tanya Chambers
1515 Dickey Dr.
Atlanta GA 30322
USA

After you submit your application

When completed, a candidate’s application is reviewed by the department, which then makes a recommendation to the Dean regarding admission. Official notice of admission must come from the Graduate Dean. International students will receive notice of admission from the university’s graduate admission officer upon approval of the Dean (typically in late March).

Individual faculty do not make admissions decisions and students are not admitted directly into individual research laboratories. Rather, an admissions committee of several faculty reviews all applications. This committee considers the entire application including grades, test scores, research experience, letters of recommendation, the statement of purpose, and in some cases an interview, prior to making a recommendation to the Graduate School for admission. You may write to Emory faculty to learn more about their research interests.
