New Student Resources
Courses
All students entering in full standing must take 9 courses for a Ph.D. degree. 5 or 6 courses are taken in the first year, and the remaining courses are generally special topics courses taken during the second and third year. Some courses may be taken in other science departments, including biochemistry and biological sciences, physics, and mathematics and computer science. Students who hold a master’s degree may enter in advanced standing, and thus must take only 4 courses for a Ph.D. degree. The research course is required in the first year, and a two-day ethics course is given in late August or middle of January the second year.
