Emory Competitive Fellowships

Emory offers several fellowships to outstanding applicants each year. The Programs nominate applicants for these fellowships. There are no additional forms for the applicant to complete, but all application materials must arrive by the deadline date.

  • The Woodruff Fellowship : The Woodruff Fellowship is the most prestigious fellowship offered by the Graduate School and is awarded to exceptional students who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement. The fellowship covers up to five years of tuition and fees, provides a $5,000 supplement to the base stipend and $1,000 for educational/travel expenses per year for the five year length of the award.
  • The Emory Graduate Diversity Fellowship: The Emory Graduate Diversity Fellowship (EGDF) promotes the diversity of the graduate student body. As a community we recognize that students from groups not traditionally present in the university bring new perspectives that enrich the fields of graduate study and enhance the educational experience of a student. Many individuals have the potential to expand the methodologies, the topics of research, and the applications of various disciplines because of their unique background. Eligible students may belong to a specific ethnic group, race, culture, socioeconomic group, or gender traditionally underrepresented in their proposed field of study, or possess other qualities that will enhance the diverse community of scholars in the Graduate School. The Graduate School considers each applicant's promise of making a notable contribution to their incoming class by exhibiting particular strengths or characteristics, including a unique intellectual achievement, employment experience, nonacademic performance, or personal background. The fellowship covers all tuition and fees and provides  $27,000 for twelve months for two (2) years. U.S. citizens and permanent residents are eligible.

  • The Cherry L. Emerson Awards: The Cherry L. Emerson Award is offered by our department to incoming students with the highest potential for independent research. The intent of this fellowship is to ensure that our students are not encumbered by financial obligations and have the time to commit to becoming first-rate scientists. Students receive a 2,500 supplement to their first paycheck in September.
  • Travel awards: The graduate school awards up to $650 per student-presenter
per academic year for paper or poster presentations at professional conferences.

Cost of Living & Visitor Information

The cost of living in suburban Atlanta compares very favorably to other university cities, and in only rare instances is the cost of living in the Emory area higher than that of comparable universities.  The most convenient area in which to live near Emory is Decatur, so this city was used in the “Salary Calculator” (http://www.homefair.com/homefair/calc/salcalc.html) for comparison with other cities.
