The X-ray lab has two state-of-the-art instruments: a Bruker SMART APEX CCD and a SMART 1000 CCD/Hi-STAR dual-detector diffractometer.   Both diffractometers are sealed tube instruments with Oxford Cryostream low temperature systems and are controlled by NT/PC’s running the Bruker suite of programs – SMART, SAINT, GADDS, FRAMBO, ASTRO, etc.  The SMART APEX instrument has a Mo tube, while the SMART 1000 instrument is a Cu X-ray system.  Both instruments have Monocap X-ray beam intensifiers and the SMART 1000 system has a Hi-STAR area detector as well for powder diffraction, thin-film and fiber X-ray experiments.

In addition, the lab has a full compliment of NT PC’s with all the necessary software for structure solution, graphics and publication and the NIST and Cambridge Crystallographic data files.  In addition to the director of the X-ray Crystallography Center,  a service instructor, Xikui Fang, is available to assist in any of the functions of the Center.

NSF Grant #CHE-9974864 helped purchase the SMART APEX and NIH Grant #S10-RR13673 was used toward the purchase of the SMART 1000.
