International Opportunities

Study Abroad with Chemistry

Chemistry majors have more reasons than ever to study abroad and now, at Emory there are many different ways to integrate a study abroad experience into your chemistry degree. Not only does an international experience help develop leadership skills and a deeper understanding of other cultures, it opens up a world of new professional opportunities. Today’s scientific enterprise involves problems that are global and international teams of scientists collaborating to solve these global problems.

With the help of Emory’s Science Experience Abroad programs, some of which are open only to Chemistry majors, students can stay on track towards their major, pursue their professional and career goals, and incorporate a study-abroad program.

Planning early is critical and the freshman year is a good time to learn about these opportunities and talk to a faculty advisor or someone at CIPA.

Chemistry majors have a range of programs to choose from.

  1. Summer Studies in Siena, Italy: This flagship program of the Chemistry Department is very popular with chemistry and other majors. Students wishing to take upper level chemistry courses in summer should consider this option. The courses offered in this program satisfy the chemistry major requirements.  The Chemistry department collaborates with the Chemistry Department at the University of Siena in offering this unique chemistry experience in the context of the Italian culture and history. Website for the program.
  2. Other summer programs: Chemistry students have the opportunity to join the Interdisciplinary Global Health summer program in summer 2007.  Along with Global Health seminar, chemistry majors can choose to do an independent study project with faculty in the Chemistry Department at the University of Cape Town. Website for the program.
  3. Semester at Imperial: The Chemistry department is proud to host a unique semester exchange program with Imperial College, London.  One of the world’s top ranking institutions, Imperial has often been called the MIT of the United Kingdom.  The high GPA requirement (3.5) for this program ensures that only the best students participate.  Students typically take three chemistry courses and one course in a cognate science.  Students wishing to spend a year at Imperial have the option of taking humanities courses. Students wishing to participate in undergraduate research need to be supported by their chemistry research advisor. Website for the program
  4. Other semester programs: The Department maintains close ties with several top ranking chemistry departments world wide.  These departments offer a challenging and high quality chemistry experience, and students will benefit from their stay at these institutions.  Some institutions to consider: University of Melbourne, St. Andrews, Scotland, University of Cape Town (South Africa), Bogazici University (Turkey).
  5. Research Abroad: (a) IRES fellowships: Science majors who have participated in undergraduate research at Emory are eligible to apply for the IRES summer fellowships.  The IRES fellowships support students working on research projects in an international lab.  Students should consult their research advisor at Emory well before the deadlines for the program that occur typically in October.  Students with a background in biological research can apply for funding through the Hughes International Scholars program. Applications for this are also through the IRES program.

(b) Other scholarships: Chemistry students can benefit from applying for the DAAD fellowships offered by the German Academic Exchange.  These fellowships are available for different fields of science, but particularly chemistry.  Students are paired with a graduate student, who hosts the students and facilitates the transition and the research. http://www.daad.de/rise/en/

The Pasteur foundation and the Weizmann institute also offer funding for students to perform research with world famous researchers. (website)

The National Security Education Program (NSEP) David L. Boren Undergraduate Scholarships (www.iie.org/nsep) offer a unique opportunity for U.S. undergraduates to study abroad. NSEP awards scholarships to American students for study of world regions critical to U.S. interests. As listed in the page: http://www.iie.org/programs/nsep/undergraduate/preferences.htm. Also note the priority areas of study include the sciences.

  1. Other options: Chemistry majors interested in the BS/MS program can take graduate level courses required for the MS degree at Imperial college.  Students will be expected to spend their senior year at Imperial.  Students can specialize in areas such as nanosciences at Imperial.

More information about all these programs can be obtained at the Science Experience Abroad website.

1. Study Abroad

This is a special program open to chemistry majors in their junior or senior year.  Students can spend Spring semester, summer or a year at Imperial college.  Due to the differences in the educational systems, a year at Imperial is highly recommended.  While at Imperial students can (a) choose to take all four courses each semester in the Chemistry department that can satisfy the requirements of the Chemistry BS at Emory, or (b)  choose courses in the cognate sciences or (c) choose one or two courses in the humanities if they are spending a year at Imperial.

Students applying to this program are eligible to apply for the Science Study Abroad Stipend offered by CIPA.  Please talk to a CIPA advisor about this.

2. Eligibility Requirements:

  1. Rising juniors
  2. Cumulative GPA: 3.5
  3. Letter of recommendation from Chemistry faculty

In addition to the above requirements, students who would like to participate in undergraduate research while at Imperial College need to satisfy the following requirements:

  1. At least one semester of research with a research group in Chemistry
  2. Letter of recommendation from your Chemistry department research advisor

3. BS/MS program Emory students who are interested in obtaining a joint four year BS/MS can spend their senior year at Imperial College.  Students have to be accepted to the BS/MS program in the Chemistry department at Emory and to be approved for study at Imperial College in the BS/MS – International program.

Interested students should contact Dean Preetha Ram for more information.
