Placement Test
The Chemistry Placement test is now available to all incoming freshmen and upperclassmen on Blackboard. It will be available until the end of ADD/DROP/SWAP. Please note that all students, regardless of AP/IB background, wishing to take General Chemistry (CHEM 141) MUST take the placement test before enrolling. A list of instructions for taking the test can be found by clicking here. To take the test, go to http://classes.emory.edu and follow the instructions. Good luck!
MANDATORY: Chemistry 141 Placement Test - For all students enrolling in Chem 141
WHEN? The placement test can be taken at any time BEFORE enrolling in Chemistry 141 and must be taken by all students wishing to enroll.
WHY?
- WE WANT YOU TO SUCCEED IN CHEMISTRY 141. Chem 141 is taught at a fast pace and the instructors will assume that all students have a good background in mathematics and the fundamentals of chemistry. It is necessary for you to take the test to ensure that your math and chemistry backgrounds are strong enough for you to succeed in Chem 141. The instructors have gathered data correlating specific skill levels with Chem 141 performance. We want you to succeed!
- IT MAY BE NECESSARY FOR YOU TO TAKE A COURSE BEFORE CHEM 141. During the Spring semester, “Chemistry 135: Fundamentals in Chemistry” will be offered. Students will be advised on enrollment in 141 based on their performance on the placement test.
How do I prepare for the test?
You should prepare by reviewing your high school chemistry textbook or chapters 1,2,3, and 5 of the textbook for Chem 141 by Silberberg. Most of the material on the placement test will cover these topics: algebraic manipulations, unit conversions, basic nomenclature, the concept and applications of the mole, stoichiometry, molarity, and analytical reasoning.
What is Chem 135?
Chemistry 135 is a course designed to prepare students to succeed in Chem 141. It specifically targets students who do not have a strong background in mathematics, chemistry, and problem solving skills. There is no lab requirement, nor does it count towards a GER. It is a one-semester, 2-credit course.
